6th Grade Chemical Engineers Making Ice Cream

Suppose you have a great recipe for chocolate ice cream. You like to make it at home for your family and friends. You make it in a little one-gallon machine that goes into your freezer. But what if you sell your recipe to a big food company? Now they have to be able to make thousands of gallons a day. Each gallon of ice cream needs to look and taste exactly the same. What kind of equipment could the company use? How would the recipe change? How can the factory make the ice cream at low cost? These are all questions for GREEN's 6th grade chemical engineers.

5th Graders Explore Heat Transfer with Slime

5th graders in GO GREEN learned about Heat Energy and Thermal transfer today by making thermochromic slime. The students tested how hot or cool something was by placing the slime on it and watching it change colors.

Can Mrs. Koch's Class Save Sam?

Poor Sam is a worm that has found himself in a rather unfortunate situation. His boat has capsized and his
life jacket is trapped underneath it! Poor Sam can't swim! His oar, his only means of movement, has fallen
into the rocky waters as well! He now sits perched on top of his capsized boat and he needs our help!
This was an engineering, problem solving, and teamwork activity that required the students to only use the provided paperclips to successfully put Sam (the worm) back in his boat with his life jacket on (a gummy lifesaver) and the oar on top. The kids came up with some great strategies and truly had to work together as a team to problem solve.
